Description

Hydrogen ENA fluxes in each of three IBEX-Lo energy bands in each of 21,600 [720(longitude) by 30(latitude)] bins, accumulated over 6 months. Bins are defined in J2000 ecliptic coordinates. Maps are available for energy bands 5 (209 eV), 6 (439 eV), and 7 (872 eV). PNG-formatted image files are 24 KB in size. Digital versions of these images in txt format are identified by VEPO as a separate data product.

Description

The IBEX-Lo instrument measures ENA's in eight energy bands within the 0.01-2.0 keV range. The instrument is a single-pixel imager with a 7x7 deg field of view (FOV) in three 90 deg quadrants and a 3.5 x 3.5 deg FOV in a fourth, "high resolution" quadrant. The eight energy windows overlap and have center energies of 14, 27, 52, 102, 197, 451, 908 and 1903 eV. These are referred to as bands 1 to 8, respectively, in data products. The instrumentation includes a triple- coincidence time-of-flight mass spectrometer to help distinguish between heliospheric hydrogen and interstellar oxygen and helium. The instrument images full 360 deg swaths of the sky each 15-sec spacecraft spin about the sun-pointing spin axis. In normal operation, two successive spins are devoted to each energy window every 16 spin (~4 min) periods.

Description

NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft was launched 19-Oct-2008 to discover the interaction between the solar wind and the interstellar medium. Its two energetic neutral atom (ENA) instruments measure 10 eV - 6 keV ENA's indicative of charged particle populations near and beyond the heliosphere's termination shock. The spacecraft is in a geocentric, 8-day orbit between 7000 km and 37 Re. Its spin axis is adjusted each orbit to point towards the sun. Its two ENA detectors look normal to the spin axis, thus measuring 360 deg swaths of the sky each 15-sec spacecraft spin. The full sky is measured every 6 months.
