Numerical Data Product: IBEX-Hi Histograms

Resource ID
spase://VEPO/NumericalData/IBEX/Hi/Histograms Get XML
Name
IBEX-Hi Histograms
Description

Each record captures the number of arriving ENA's of a specific energy band, coincidence type, and spin phase. Data for each full ~15s spacecraft spin are given at each of 60 spin phases in sequential records, with the J2000 right ascension and declination for look directions corresponding to each spin phase being given in the corresponding record. Also included in each record are a time tag (seconds since 00:00 UT of January 6, 1980), the IBEX location, ENA energy band and coincidence type. Positive species identifications are not made, but most arriving ENA's are hydrogen atoms. Data files are given for each 8-day orbit and for each of the 6 IBEX-Hi energy bands. The data files are in ASCII.

Name
IBEX-Hi
Description

The IBEX-Hi instrument measures ENA's in six energy bands within the 0.38-6.0 keV range. The instrument is a single-pixel imager with a 6.5 x 6.5 deg field of view that images a 6.5 x 360 swath of the sky each 15-sec spacecraft spin about the sun-pointing spin axis. The six energy windows have FWHM ranges of 0.38-0.59, 0.52-0.95, 0.84-1.55, 1.36-2.50, 1.99-3.75, 3.13-6.00 keV. These are referred to as bands 1 to 6, respectively, in data products. In normal operation, 2 successive spins are devoted to each energy window every 12 spin (~3 min) periods.

Description

NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft was launched 19-Oct-2008 to discover the interaction between the solar wind and the interstellar medium. Its two energetic neutral atom (ENA) instruments measure 10 eV - 6 keV ENA's indicative of charged particle populations near and beyond the heliosphere's termination shock. The spacecraft is in a geocentric, 8-day orbit between 7000 km and 37 Re. Its spin axis is adjusted each orbit to point towards the sun. Its two ENA detectors look normal to the spin axis, thus measuring 360 deg swaths of the sky each 15-sec spacecraft spin. The full sky is measured every 6 months.
